If you import hookah charcoal, the coconut shell briquette is almost certainly your best seller. It lights evenly, burns for well over an hour and leaves very little ash, which is exactly what shisha lounges and retail customers want. But two cartons that look identical on a supplier’s photo can perform very differently in a bowl. This guide explains the numbers that matter on a specification sheet, how to test a sample yourself, and what to settle on packaging, container loading and shipping before you place a purchase order with an Indonesian supplier.
Why Indonesian coconut shell charcoal?
Indonesia is one of the world’s largest coconut producers, so coconut shell, the raw material, is abundant and steady throughout the year. Dense, mature shells carbonise into a hard charcoal with a high carbon content and low ash, which is why Indonesian briquettes are a reference product in the Middle East, Europe and Russia. Most production is concentrated in Java and Sumatra, with factories that can press cubes, flats and fingers to the buyer’s size.

The six numbers on a shisha charcoal specification sheet
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) should report at least the following parameters. The right-hand column shows the export specification we work to for premium shisha cubes; use it as a benchmark when you compare offers.
| Parameter | What it tells you | Premium export spec |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed carbon | The share of pure carbon that produces heat. Higher means hotter and longer burning. | ≥ 78% |
| Ash content | What is left after burning. Low ash keeps the bowl clean and the flavour pure. | ≤ 2.5% |
| Moisture | Water in the briquette. High moisture makes lighting slow and causes cracking and sparks. | ≤ 5% |
| Volatile matter | Gases released when heating. Too much gives smoke and a harsh smell. | ≤ 15% |
| Burning time | How long one cube keeps useful heat in a bowl. | 90–120+ minutes |
| Ash colour | A quick visual quality check. White or light grey ash signals clean shell and good carbonisation. | White / light grey |
Be wary of offers that quote very high fixed carbon together with an unusually low price. Fixed carbon depends on shell quality and kiln control, and a figure that looks too good is often measured on a hand-picked sample rather than on production. Ask for the COA to be issued on the batch that will be shipped.
Shapes and sizes
The cube is the market standard for hookah, most often 25 × 25 × 25 mm, with 26 mm and 27 mm cubes popular in some Middle Eastern markets. Flats (for example 25 × 25 × 15 mm) suit heat management devices and smaller bowls. Because the briquettes are pressed in moulds, a good factory can produce custom sizes, but each new size needs a sample run, so build that time into your first order.
How to test a sample yourself
A lab report is essential, but a simple bench test tells you how the product behaves for the end customer. Light three or four cubes from different boxes and note:
- Ignition time: on a coil burner, a good cube is fully glowing in about 8 to 10 minutes.
- Smell and smoke: there should be no chemical smell and almost no smoke once lit.
- Sparks and cracking: popping, sparking or splitting usually means moisture or poor mixing.
- Burn time and heat: time how long the cube keeps a bowl at smoking temperature.
- Ash: check the colour and whether the ash stays on the cube or falls apart into dust.
Keep a few untested cubes from the approved sample. They become your reference when the production lot arrives.
Packaging and private label
Shisha charcoal is usually sold in 1 kg retail boxes or 10 kg cartons for lounges. A typical export pack is an inner plastic bag to keep out humidity, a printed box with your brand, and a master carton closed with strapping. If you sell under your own brand, send the artwork early and approve a printed proof before production. At Unggul Ekspor our ex-works price already includes the printed box, inner plastic, strapping and loading, so there are no surprise packing costs.
How much fits in a container?
As a planning figure, a 20 ft container takes around 20 tonnes of shisha cubes and a 40 ft container around 27 tonnes. The exact load depends on carton size and pallet choice, so confirm it in the quotation. Many first orders start as LCL or a mixed container to test the market before moving to full container loads.

Shipping rules changed in 2026
Charcoal of vegetable origin falls under UN 1361 (Class 4.2, substances liable to spontaneous combustion) in the IMDG Code. Amendment 42-24 of the code, mandatory since 1 January 2026, tightened the rules for charcoal shipped in containers, including requirements on weathering and temperature control, packaging, stowage and dangerous goods documentation. In practice, shipping lines now ask for a current Safety Data Sheet and a self-heating test report from an accredited laboratory, and many book charcoal as dangerous goods. Check your carrier’s requirements before you fix the shipment date, and make sure your supplier allows enough cooling time between carbonisation and packing.
Payment terms and Incoterms
Prices from Indonesia are usually quoted EXW or FOB in US dollars, with CFR and CIF available if you prefer the supplier to arrange freight. A staged T/T protects both sides: we work with 50% advance on order confirmation, 20% when packing starts and 30% when the container is closed, so the balance is only paid once the goods are loaded.
Checklist before you place the order
